A Day in the Life of a Practice Room

This is from William Harvey's thoughts about visiting Bagan, Myanmar with his violin.  William is a Juilliard graduate and Founder of Cultures in Harmony.

Yesterday, the festival musicians and some of the supporters climbed all over large pagodas with dozens of other tourists in Bagan, Myanmar. While the experience was incredible, the large crowds of camera-toting fellow foreigners made it difficult to apprehend the sense of spirituality and mystery which one would expect from this land dotted with hundreds of pagodas, some of which date back a thousand years. So today, Kirsty Griffiths (the festival's mezzo soprano and choral conductor) agreed to join me in a more interesting quest. This time, we would go alone to the smaller pagodas, and I would carry my violin.

Allegro!!! is an elite string performance ensemble of the Western Springs School of Talent Education and the Naperville Suzuki School. An inventive and eclectic mix of music, dance, and video, Allegro!!! has been dazzling audiences in Chicago and beyond for nearly 20 years. Allegro!!! has performed at countless local events and also participated by invitation in recent performances for the National Suzuki Association of the Americas Biennial Conference in Minneapolis, MN and the American String Teachers Association National Conference in Atlanta, GA.

As a result of their performance at the American String Teacher Association's conference last March, the group was invited by Dean Marshall, Artistic Director of the world renowned phenomenon “Barrage”, to take part in a two week concert tour of China this summer. This trip will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for the students. Allegro!!! will be performing in the largest concert venues in Beijing, Hushou, Hangshou, Ningbo, and Shanghai. In addition to their concert performances, they will have the opportunity to experience Chinese culture and visit many of the country's most famous cultural and historic sites. This year's spring concert on May 11th will serve as benefit to support this upcoming trip.

Beethoven - Symphony No. 6 (Proms 2012)

The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra Co-Founded and lead by the famous conductor Daniel Barenboim played at the Royal Albert hall in July this summer (2012).  Here they are playing the Beethoven Symphony No. 6.   What is remarkable about this orchestra is that it is made up of young musicians who would never have the opportunity to meet let alone make music together if it wasn't for the great belief that Maestro Barenboim has that music can bring the world together, even when they are in conflict with one another.  Perhaps that is the most important time they need to be playing music together.  In this case it is young people from Israel and Palestine.   Note by note these young people are using music to change the world they live in.

What would your tone be like if you had to hold your bow with your elbow instead of your fingers? You might be surprised.

With out fingers like you and I have this violinist is faced with using every thing he can do with his elbow to make tone on his violin.   With the help of some technology a craftsman at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab Center created so that he could hold the bow with some control.   In spite of this he is able to fill concert halls with a big sound.    It is a reminder to us all that tone on the violin lives in our elbows.   Maybe the rest of us have too many fingers between us and a deep tone.
